The Panopticon Papers

Panoptique1791Professor Alistair Duff spent a week at the University of London, studying the unpublished papers of Jeremy Bentham. Bentham, as well as being the founder of Utilitarianism and University College London, is (in)famous for his idea of the Panoptic (all-seeing) Penitentiary. This has become as much a metaphor for today’s ‘information society’ as George Orwell’s Ministry of Truth in 1984.

Many thanks to staff at UCL’s Special Collections department and the Bentham Project (www.ucl.ac.uk/BenthamProject).
